How to Embed a Video in PowerPoint

Your visual aid needs great visuals, and a video is a fantastic addition. Let’s explore how to insert video into a PowerPoint presentation. This process involves a few simple steps, and there are multiple methods to do it.

If you haven’t already downloaded your free PowerPoint Template, scroll up to the section titled “Meet Delusi: Your Free PowerPoint Template Download Is Here”. Click on the link in this section.

Add a Local Video to PowerPoint Presentations

1. Select Your Slide

The first step is to choose which slide you want to embed a video in. In PowerPoint, scroll through the slides and select the most suitable one. For this tutorial, I’m selecting the seventh slide.

2. Insert Your Video Into PowerPoint

To embed a video in PowerPoint, go to the Insert tab. On the far-right side of the screen, click the Video drop-down menu. From there, choose the Movie From File… option.

This selection opens a window where you can choose the video you want to insert. Locate your video on your device, select it, and then click Insert.

3. Resize Your Video File

Congratulations! You’ve just learned how to embed video into a PowerPoint slideshow. However, your embedded video may take over the entire slide.

To adjust this, click and hold a sizing handle in any of the corners of the video. Drag the sizing handle towards the center to resize it. I prefer my video to cover the photo placeholder in the corner of the slide, but feel free to position it wherever you like.

Insert a Web Video In PowerPoint

If you have a video you want to share but don’t have it downloaded, you can still embed it in PowerPoint from the web. Here’s how to do that.

Remember, you’ll need to be connected to the internet on presentation day!

Navigate to the page of the video you’d like to embed. Copy the link from the address bar.

image

Now let’s insert this video link into a PowerPoint slide. Again, select the Video drop-down from the Insert tab, but this time click Online Movie….

In the dialog box that opens, paste your web video link. Remember, any online video you use is subject to the provider’s Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Once your link is pasted, click Insert.

You’re now free to resize and position your video wherever you’d like on your slide.

Make Video Placeholders in Delusi

Now that you’ve learned how to embed a video in PowerPoint using two different methods, let’s explore how to use the Delusi template for embedding videos with placeholders. This method utilizes Delusi’s master slides.

A master slide, or slide master, is the overarching slide layout that controls the design of multiple slides. By modifying the master slide, you can customize all slides sharing that layout at once. Here’s how to do it.

1. Access Delusi’s Master Slides

To make changes to Delusi’s master slides, navigate to the View tab and click on Slide Master.

You’ll notice that the slides you’ve worked on are no longer visible. Instead, you’re now looking at the master slides for Delusi. Locate the slide layout that corresponds with the slide you’re working on. Here’s the master slide for the seventh slide:

2. Replace the Image Placeholder

While I like the location of this image placeholder, it’s not usable for embedding a video. Therefore, I’m going to replace it with a video placeholder.

First, delete the existing image placeholder. Next, navigate to the Insert Placeholder drop-down in the ribbon. You will see several placeholder options; select Media.

If you don’t see the Insert Placeholder option, ensure you’ve selected the Slide Master tab in the ribbon.

3. Choose the Location of Your Video Placeholder

Now that you’ve selected the media placeholder, create its size by clicking and dragging your cursor. Position the placeholder as desired.

I’ve chosen to place mine in the bottom left corner. Here’s how it looks:

4. Update Your Slide

If you’re satisfied with your video placeholder, it’s time to exit the master slides. From the Slide Master tab, click Close Master.

Now, update your slide layout to reflect the changes made in the master slide. Select the slide you just added a video placeholder to, and from the Home tab, click the Layout drop-down. The master slide layout you edited will be highlighted.

Click on it, and you’ll see that your picture placeholder has now become a video placeholder. All slides that share this layout can be modified in this manner, allowing you to embed videos effortlessly with the size of the placeholder you created!

We’re All Done!

Working with videos in PowerPoint is as straightforward as using the Delusi template. What I appreciate most about premium templates is their customizability. All it takes is finding a layout you like and adjusting it to suit your vision.

For my coffee-themed presentation, I decided to add a few finishing touches. For this topic, I felt it was best to have a video with rounded edges and an organic background texture that matched the earthy vibe of Delusi’s color palette.

After adding my content and making these adjustments, I was left with this:

Creating a slide with this layout from scratch would have taken hours.
