Step-by-Step Instructions to Insert a Word Document

Inserting a Word document into PowerPoint is especially useful if you’ll be sharing your presentation online or emailing it to someone.
Let’s walk through the process of inserting a document in PowerPoint presentations from Microsoft Word. It’s an easy procedure that you’ll likely find yourself using often, helping you add more content to your presentations.
For this quick tutorial, we will work with the beautiful Simphony Presentation Template from Envato Elements. It’s a stunning design that can guide you in learning how to insert a file into PPT from Microsoft Word.
Please note that the tips in this section were written using Windows and Office 365. If you’re using a different operating system or version of PowerPoint, your steps may vary slightly.
Step 1: Find the Insert > Object Menu
To get started with inserting a document into PowerPoint, open the Simphony template and navigate to the slide where you want to insert the file. This template is compatible with our insert files in PPT steps.
First, locate PowerPoint’s ribbon, which is the series of menu bars across the top of the screen. You’ll see options labeled Home, Insert, Draw, Design, and more. Click on Insert.
The Insert tab opens, displaying a variety of options grouped into distinct categories. Among these, find the Text group and choose Object.
Step 2: Insert Word Document Into PowerPoint
Upon clicking the Object button, the Insert Object menu appears, allowing you to insert a file into PPT.
On the left side, select the Create from file option. This allows you to navigate to a file stored on your computer for insertion.
Next, click Browse. A file explorer window opens, allowing you to navigate to the Word document you wish to insert. Select the document and click OK. This step is crucial as you learn how to insert a Word document in PowerPoint.
Step 3: Place on Your Slide
You’re now ready to insert the file into PPT from your Word document! It’s advisable to display the document’s icon directly on the slide so your audience knows that you have a file ready to share.
To do this, check the Display as icon box on the Insert Object menu. If you opt not to check this, the contents of your Word document will appear directly on the slide. While displaying the full content can be useful, showing an icon is often a more effective choice. Finally, click OK.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully learned how to insert a Word document into PowerPoint. A small Word thumbnail will appear on your slide. You can click and drag it to reposition it on the slide. Choose a convenient spot, and you’re all set! Your audience can now click and explore the document you’ve attached.
