Highlighting text in PowerPoint can enhance your presentations by emphasizing key points and making your slides more engaging.

Highlighting in PowerPoint for Windows or macOS

    Open your PowerPoint project. You’ll find the program in your Start Menu or Applications folder. To open your project, navigate to File > Open. Alternatively, you can right-click the file in your file browser and select Open With > PowerPoint.

    Select the text you want to highlight. If you want to highlight multiple non-contiguous areas of text, simply skip this step for now.

    Click the Home tab. If this tab is already active, you can move on to the next step.

    Click the ▼ next to the text highlight icon. This icon appears as “ab” on a yellow line and paintbrush within the “Font” grouping of the Home tab.

    Choose a highlight color. If you have text already selected, it will highlight in the color you choose. For non-contiguous text, first select a color, then hover over the text you wish to highlight. When your cursor changes to the highlight icon, click to apply the highlight. Press “Esc” when you’re done.

    • To remove highlighting, select the text, return to the Home tab, and choose “No color” from the text highlight dropdown.

Highlighting in PowerPoint Online

    Visit PowerPoint Online in a web browser.** You can use any computer or laptop with internet access. If prompted, log in with your Microsoft account.

    Select the project you want to edit. You will see a list of your recently used projects stored in OneDrive.

    Choose the text to highlight. Note that the web version does not support highlighting non-contiguous text. You will need to select and apply highlights to each piece of text individually as you navigate through your slides.

    Access the Home tab. If you are already on this tab, proceed to the next step.

    Click the ▼ next to the text highlight icon. This icon looks like a yellow line and paintbrush and is located in the “Font” grouping of the Home tab. Click the downward-facing arrow next to the icon to choose your desired highlight color.

    Select a highlight color. The icon’s color will change to match your selection, and clicking the icon will apply the same highlight color again.

    • To remove a highlight, select the text, navigate back to the Home tab, and select “No color” from the text highlight dropdown.
