Convert PowerPoint to Google Slides

If you often use Google Slides for your presentations and you receive a PowerPoint template or presentation, you’ll need to convert it to a different format.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to convert your presentation from PowerPoint to Google Slides step by step.

Converting a PowerPoint Presentation into a Google Slides Presentation

  1. Upload the PowerPoint File
    Select the PowerPoint file and import it into your Google Drive account. To do this, click on New → File upload. Then locate the file on your computer and click Open. Alternatively, you can drag the file directly into your browser.

  2. Open the File
    Once the file has been uploaded, double-click it.

  3. Open with Google Slides
    Click on Open with and select Google Slides.

  4. Edit Your Presentation
    Your PowerPoint presentation will open in Google Slides, and you can edit it just like any Google Slides presentation. Be aware that some fonts might change during the conversion.

  5. Save as Google Slides
    Although you can work with the PowerPoint presentation in Google Slides, if you want to have it as a Google Slides file, click File → Save as Google Slides. This will create a copy of the presentation in Google Slides format.

Importing a PowerPoint Presentation into Google Slides

  1. Create a New Presentation
    Start by creating a new blank presentation in Google Slides.

  2. Open the PowerPoint File
    Click File → Open. Choose the .pptx file from your Google Drive account or upload it from your computer by clicking the Upload tab first.

  3. Access the Presentation
    The presentation will open as a Google Slides presentation, not as a .pptx file.

Importing Slides from PowerPoint into Google Slides

  1. Open Your Target Presentation
    Google Slides allows you to load specific slides from another Google Slides presentation or from a PowerPoint presentation. Open the presentation into which you want to import slides.

  2. Import Slides
    Click File → Import slides.

  3. Choose the Presentation
    In the new window, you’ll see all the presentations available in your Google Drive. If you want to import from a presentation stored on your computer, click the Upload tab first.

  4. Select the Presentation
    Choose the presentation that contains the slides you wish to import and click Select.

  5. Choose Slides to Import
    Select the slides you want to import. Check “Keep original theme” if you want to maintain the theme of the original presentation, or uncheck it if you want them to adapt to your current presentation.

Importing Other File Formats into Google Slides

If you’ve used other presentation programs, such as OpenOffice Impress or Keynote, you can still import those files into Google Slides.

  1. OpenOffice Presentations
    If you have an OpenOffice Impress presentation, you must first convert it from .odp format into a PowerPoint file. Click File → Save As, and select Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/XP. Then follow the instructions from the earlier sections of this tutorial.

  2. Keynote Presentations
    For Keynote presentations, save it as a PowerPoint file by clicking File → Export To → PowerPoint. Then follow the instructions from the earlier sections of this tutorial.
