One of the most important elements when it comes to designing is the typography. A good choice will reinforce the context of your message, improving legibility and helping you create a visual hierarchy, so your texts don’t go unnoticed. In this new tutorial, you’ll learn how to change the typography of your presentation. You’ll also find out how to add new fonts or how to embed them to your presentation.

To change the font for specific text in your presentation, follow these steps:

How to Change All the Fonts of the Presentation

If you want to change the font for your entire presentation, you can do so through the master slides:

  • Navigate to the View tab, and in the Master Views group, click on Slide Master.

image

  • Select the first slide (the slide master) from the list on the left side of the screen.

image

  • Choose one or more text boxes to change the font. The upper text box affects all slide titles, while the lower text box affects the remaining text boxes in your presentation. In the Font group on the Home tab, click the Font drop-down arrow and select your desired font.

  • Alternatively, you can change all the fonts by using the Fonts option located on the Slide Master tab in the Background group. Click the drop-down arrow to find a suitable font.

  • If you need a custom font, use the Customize Fonts option at the bottom of the Fonts drop-down list. A new window will open, allowing you to modify your font choices.

  • For presentations not originally created in PowerPoint, you can change all the master slide fonts at once by clicking the Replace drop-down arrow in the Editing group on the Home tab, and selecting Replace Fonts.

image

  • In the dialog that appears, choose the font you want to replace and select the new font from the “With” dropdown. Click Replace to apply the changes.

  • To exit the Slide Master view, go to the Slide Master tab and click Close Master View.

  • The new font is now applied throughout your presentation.

How to Add Fonts

To add new fonts to PowerPoint, follow these steps:

  • PowerPoint will recognize any fonts installed on your computer. To add a new font, simply download and install it.
  • If you’re using templates from us, you’ll find the fonts used listed in the final slides, along with their respective Google Fonts URLs.

image

  • Visit Google Fonts and select the font you want by clicking the “+” button. A tab will appear at the bottom of the screen.

image

  • By default, only the “Regular” style will be selected. To choose additional styles, click Customize and select the ones you need.

image

  • Once satisfied, click the Download button.

  • Install the downloaded font on your computer.
  • If PowerPoint is open during the installation, save your presentation, close PowerPoint, and reopen it. The new font will be available for use.

How to Embed Fonts

To ensure your presentation retains its typography across different computers, you can embed fonts by following these steps:

  • Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
  • Click the File tab (in Office 2017, it’s the Windows button).

image

  • Select Options.

image

  • Choose the Save tab. You’ll see a checkbox for “Embed fonts in the file.” By checking this box, the font will be embedded in your presentation.

image

  • Below that, you’ll find two options:
  1. If you select the first option, only the characters used in the presentation will be embedded, minimizing the file size.
  2. If you select the second option, all characters from the fonts will be embedded, which increases the file size but allows you to work with the presentation on any computer.

  • Once you’ve made your selections, click OK.
