Insert GIFs in PowerPoint

Do you want to boost your presentation? One of the best ways to do so is by using GIFs! They are fun, easy to add, and provide an amusing way to support your information.

Inserting a GIF from Your Computer

In this tutorial, we will use some Stories illustrations designed by Freepik. We will learn how to edit and download them and then add them to your presentation from your computer. Let’s get started!

  1. If there is a previous illustration that doesn’t match what you wanted for the slide, delete it before adding a new one!
  2. In the toolbar, click on InsertPicturesThis Device.
  3. Select the GIF and then click on Insert.
  4. Click and drag to move the image. To resize it, click and drag from any of the corners while pressing Shift. This will help maintain the image’s proportions.
  5. Note that when inserting a GIF, PowerPoint automatically adds a text description. If you want to omit this text, click on Mark as decorative in the Alt Text section.

Adding GIFs Using URLs

PowerPoint allows you to add GIFs from the internet. Let’s discover how to do it.

  1. In the toolbar, click on InsertPicturesOnline Pictures.
  2. A window will open where you can type what you are looking for; press Enter.
  3. Click on the image you want to add.
  4. Click on Insert.

  • As before, the image will appear with a subtext that you can delete by clicking on “Mark as decorative.” PowerPoint will also add a text box containing information about the source of the image. You can edit or delete this text, but remember to acknowledge the owner of the resource! Consider using the last slide of your presentation for this.
  • To resize the image, select it and drag from any of the corners while pressing Shift to maintain the proportions.

Pro tip: You can also add stock images to your presentation. In the toolbar, click on InsertImagesStock images. Search for the one you want, select it, and click on Insert. This option is available for Office 365 users. If you have an earlier version of PowerPoint, you may not have this feature.

Editing a GIF in PowerPoint

  1. Right-click on the image → Style → Select the style you like the most.

Here’s a brief summary of how to apply animations:

  1. Click on the image → Animations.
  2. Click twice on the animation you want to apply and set the Duration, Sound effects, and Apply to all options.
  3. In the Animations tab, you have additional options.
  4. Use Effect options to edit animations.
  5. You can also use tools like Add Animation (to apply another animation), Animation Pane, Trigger, Start, Duration, Delay, or reorder animations.

Pro Tip: Be cautious about adding too many animations to your presentation, as it may distract your audience.
