Grouping Elements in PowerPoint
2 minutes read
Grouping shapes or images in PowerPoint allows us to move or apply an effect to multiple elements at the same time. In this new Slidesgo School tutorial, you’ll learn how to group images or shapes in PowerPoint.
Grouping Elements
To start grouping elements in PowerPoint, follow these simple steps:
-
Open PowerPoint and navigate to the slide containing the elements you wish to group. Please note that all elements must be located on the same slide, as grouping elements from different slides is not supported.
-
Hold the Ctrl key (on Windows) or the Cmd key (on Mac) while selecting the elements you want to group one by one.
-
After selecting the elements, go to the Shape Format tab (if you’ve selected shapes or a combination of shapes and images) or the Picture Format tab (if you’ve selected only images). If you are using a version of Office that isn’t Office 365, these tabs will simply be called Format, located under “Drawing Tools” or “Picture Tools”.
-
In the Arrange group, click on Group and then select Group again.
-
Alternatively, you can right-click on the selected elements and choose Group, then Group from the context menu.
Ungrouping Elements
To ungroup elements that have been grouped together, follow these steps:
-
Open PowerPoint and go to the slide containing the grouped elements you wish to ungroup. Select the group.
-
Navigate to the Shape Format tab or the Picture Format tab, depending on the elements in the group. If you’re using a version not compatible with Office 365, this tab will simply be labeled Format under “Drawing Tools” or “Picture Tools”.
-
In the Arrange group, click on Group and then select Ungroup.
-
You can also right-click on the grouped elements and choose Group, then Ungroup from the menu.
Regrouping Elements
If you’ve previously ungrouped elements and want to group them again, you can do so by using the Regroup option:
-
Navigate to the slide where the elements you wish to regroup are located.
-
Select one of the elements from the previous group; you do not need to select all of them. Then, go to the Shape Format tab or the Picture Format tab, depending on the selected element. If you’re not using Office 365, both tabs will be called Format under “Drawing Tools” or “Picture Tools”.
-
In the Arrange group, click on Group and then select Regroup.
-
Alternatively, you can right-click on the selected element and choose Group, then Regroup.
