In this article, you’ll learn how to create a magnifying glass effect in PowerPoint. You’ll also discover some essential tips for delivering an effective PowerPoint presentation.

How to Create a Magnifying Glass Effect in PowerPoint

If you want to emphasize a specific area of an image, creating a magnifying effect in PowerPoint is an effective solution. Here’s how to do it:

1. Download a Template

For this tutorial, I will use the MAPS infographics template from Envato Elements. You are free to choose any template that features an object where you want to apply the magnifying glass effect.

The MAPS infographics template comprises 35 slides in a 16:9 HD format and includes animations and slide transitions. It is compatible with both PPT and PPTX formats.

2. Choose a Graphic

Select a graphic that you wish to enhance with a magnifying effect. In this tutorial, I will be utilizing the World Maps 6 Version from Envato Elements. This graphic is available in various file types, including AI, EPS, PNG, and JPG.

To add the graphic to your slide, click on the Insert tab in the toolbar, then select the Pictures button. A menu will appear where you can choose the location of your image file. Once you locate your file, double-click it to add it to your slide.

3. Duplicate the Graphic

To duplicate the graphic, first select it. Then, hold down the Control + Shift keys simultaneously. Drag the graphic to a different location on the slide while continuing to hold down those keys. Your graphic is now successfully duplicated.

4. Crop & Adjust

Click on the image that you want to magnify. Once selected, a tab named Picture Format will appear in the toolbar. Click on this tab and then select the Crop button, followed by the arrow next to it.

From the menu that appears, choose the Crop to Shape option and then select the oval shape from the subsequent menu. You will see black handles around the image; use these to adjust the size as needed.

5. Add Picture Effects

Select the area where you want to create the magnifying effect. Click on the Format Pane button in the toolbar under the Picture Format tab. A Format Picture side panel will appear. Click on the Effects tab in this panel.

Under the Effects tab, find the Shadow section. You’ll see a Presets field with a Shadow button; click it to access a menu of shadow options. Choose a shadow effect that complements your picture (I used the Outer: Offset: Bottom Right option).

You may also choose to draw a circle or box around the magnified area for added emphasis.

PowerPoint Presentation Tips

To ensure you deliver the best presentation possible, consider these five effective tips:

1. Use a PowerPoint Template

Utilizing premium PowerPoint templates can greatly ease the design process. Not everyone has the skills to create visually appealing slides, but professionally designed templates are available to give your presentation a stylish and impressive look. You can select themed templates tailored for specific topics or multipurpose templates that suit any subject.

2. Don’t Use Too Many Animations

When it comes to animations, remember that less is often more. Overusing animations can dilute their impact. While animations can enhance transitions between slides or direct attention to key points, excessive use may undermine your credibility.

3. Involve the Audience

Engaging your audience is crucial for maintaining their attention during your presentation. Consider incorporating quizzes or interactive elements to involve them actively. Without audience engagement, the effectiveness of your presentation diminishes.

4. Create an Outline

Creating an outline helps in structuring your presentation effectively. PowerPoint includes an outline view that allows you to plan the content of your slides, ensuring a smooth and coherent flow of information.

5. Use Visuals

Integrating high-quality visuals can help establish a connection with your audience and convey information effectively. Ensure that the visuals you choose are clear and relevant, as poor-quality images can distract from your message.
